Prime Minister Edi Rama was this Monday, March 1, in Brussels, within the 11th Stabilization and Association Council.
At a press conference, together with Josep Borell, Vice President of the European Commission and Commissioner for Enlargement, Oliver Varhelyi, our Prime Minister expressed the dissatisfaction of our country for leaving the region for the distribution of the vaccine, but on the other hand he said that it is happy that Covax has started giving countries the first doses of the vaccine.
The Prime Minister also spoke about the country’s integration into the EU, saying that according to him, Albania has fulfilled the tasks for the first intergovernmental conference.
“Secondly, I am happy to hear what we have heard in different circumstances, while it is emphasized by you that Albania has done everything it should have done for the opening of the first intergovernmental conference. “We know how things are going, the most important thing for us is that we have done our job and we are always very attentive to listen to the Commission, because it is the highest evaluation mechanism of a country’s progress”, said the Prime Minister.
Excerpt from the speech of the Prime Minister at the press conference:
“Thank you for giving us a warm welcome at such a strange time. Let me tell you that we greatly appreciate the efforts made by the commissioner to be on our side at this delicate time, when we in Albania and other countries in the region were left out in the distribution of vaccines.
It was a shocking moment for our people, because as you know we do not live on the border with the EU, we live inside but we are surrounded in our region by the borders of the EU. Our people who felt that vaccines were not something they deserved to have at the same time as others. Today there are 140 countries that have not started any injections. There are 10 countries that have 705 production, it is difficult for us but also for many EU members.
I am happy and I want to announce that Covax is finally starting to give the countries the first doses and we will be happy to receive the first shipment of the Astrazeneca vaccine.
Secondly, I am happy to hear what we have heard in different circumstances, while it is emphasized by you that Albania has done everything it should to do for the opening of the first intergovernmental conference. We know how things go, the most important thing for us is that we have done our job and we are always very attentive to listen to the Commission, because it is the highest evaluation mechanism of a country’s progress.
I very much hope that the investment plan in the Balkans is an extremely useful instrument to strengthen our economies and cooperation, to make our future better and more secure, as we move forward in the integration process.
We do not make these reforms because you or others ask for them, but they are what we owe to future generations. “The EU is a blessing for our country and the future of our country. It may seem like a curse in the current circumstances, but it is a pain that we must take in the name of the future.”
