Evacuees from the port city of Mariupol have spoken of the devastation caused in their hometown after weeks of Russian bombing.
“There is no Mariupol” says Lyudmyla, a 54-year-old English teacher, for the Reuters news agency, as she arrived in Zaporizhia, about 250km from her hometown.
“We stayed in the basement for 10 days and we never went out, we did not have water or electricity.”
Lyudmyla says she really misses the children she taught.
“I can not imagine what to do now.”
Another evacuee, Sergiy, 44, says he traveled from Mariupol with his family, dog and parrot.
People were “fighting for fuel” to escape the city, he told Reuters.
Sergiy says people had died trying to leave Mariupol.
“There were many people dying on the streets, dead bodies lying on the streets.”
