For a decade now, Erkand Qerimaj and Briken Calja have been the two most successful names in Albanian weightlifting and undoubtedly the example of their young descendants in this sport.
Yet they had never been so close and so challenging to each other as in this weekend’s national weightlifting championship.
Elez Gjoza: We are following the competition between two athletes Qerimaj and Calja who are friends with each other but now also challengers. Only one of them will go to the Balkan Championship as for each weight we have the right to send only one athlete.
And this challenge against each other was won by the world champion Briken Calja who managed to lift 2 kg more in doubles, 340 against 338 of Qerimaj. At the end of the race, Brikeni also received Erkand’s congratulations showing a lighthouse play and high level sportsmanship between them.
Erkand Qerimaj: It was an exciting race, we had a good time and experienced it with a lot of emotions. It went best, I improved my training results, as did Briken. I think we are each other’s motivation to achieve more.
Briken Calja: It has been one of the most exciting races because it’s about Erkand and he is a European champion and beating him is extremely strong. But beyond the European euphoria, I will soon speak Albanian. And I strongly believe and believe that the results will be shared between me and Erkand first place and second place.
This success sends Briken Caljan to the Mediterranean Games in Algeria at the end of June as the main representative of Albania, as each participating country is represented by only one athlete for each weight.
