When it comes to cigarettes, the best solution is to give it up completely.
But for adults who choose not to give up nicotine completely, there are scientifically proven smokeless products which present a better alternative to cigarettes. If smokers around the world switch to these products, it is an opportunity to combat the effects of cigarettes on public health.
Developments in science and technology have changed the way we live. Utilizing these developments to reduce the negative effects of potentially harmful behaviors is known as “harm reduction.” Harm reduction strategies can reduce the negative consequences not only for us but also for others and society as a whole.
This positive change is best evidenced by countries like Japan, where the market introduction of the IQOS heating alternative in 2014, brought a drastic decline in cigarette sales year after year, with up to 10% fewer cigarettes sold each year. Heat products manage to reduce damage through the principle of heating, not combustion, which significantly reduces the level of emitted chemicals, up to 95% according to numerous studies.
These alternatives eliminate the dangerous combustion process, which releases smoke containing about 6,000 harmful or potentially harmful chemicals, of which 100 are also responsible for smoking-related diseases. By heating the tobacco thread enough to release nicotine, and avoiding smoke with harmful chemicals, heating products present a chance for public health.
Electronic cigarettes are also another well-known way of reducing harm, but unlike heating products they do not release nicotine through the heating of tobacco fibers, but through the evaporation of liquid nicotine.
