Heatwaves are gripping both Europe and the United States this week, with temperatures over 40 degrees Celsius.
Fires are raging across Europe with mass evacuations in Italy, France and Greece.
The rise in temperatures caused by climate change has brought many problems.
Greenhouse gas emissions from human activities have warmed the planet by about 1.2 Celsius since pre-industrial times.
This warmer base means that even higher temperatures will accompany us in the future.
A study in the journal Nature said that this month heat waves in Europe have increased three to four times faster.
Since 2004, more than 400 such studies have been done on extreme weather events, including heat, floods and droughts, calculating how much of a role climate change has played in each.
The heat waves will get worse:
Global warming is already causing extreme heat events.
“On average on Earth, heat extremes that would have occurred once every 10 years without human influence on the climate are now three times more frequent,” said ETH Zurich climate scientist Sonia Seneviratne.
Temperatures will only stop rising if people stop adding greenhouse gases to the atmosphere.
Until then, heat waves are expected to worsen, increasing the risk.
