The grain crisis and their prices have been part of recent political debates. The wheat harvesting campaign has just started in what is known as the Barn of Albania, in Myzeqe.
Farmers say production is good, but traders are taking advantage of the crisis and seeking to buy wheat cheaper than rye:
“A quintal of wheat is bought with 35 thousand lekë, while a quintal of hime is bought with 37 thousand old lekë. This is a price that does not justify their cost and effort at all. I give better to chickens and cattle than I sell to traders. On July 26 I will leave the country like all youth. Here you work, you serve the land, you produce, and in the end you are just as poor.
I have not received oil, as the oil is selectively distributed according to party beliefs.
I have been working on the combine since 1976, but like this year it has never been so bad.
Wheat is the bread of the people, but the government does not ask about us and the people. The combine wants diesel. I buy it the same as for a car, with 2600 lekë per liter. ”
