Twelve women have lost their lives in an illegal gold mine in Indonesia’s northern Sumatra province when a piece of rock collapsed and engulfed them.
The victims are aged 30 to 55, the provincial chief said.
“Women were working in traditional gold mines using hand-made tools. Perhaps, they did not realize there was a landslide. “We, the local authorities, have tried to stop this illegal mine, but the locals are relying on this work for economic reasons, so we can not close it all.”
Unlicensed mining is common throughout mineral-rich Indonesia, and there are numerous locals looking for gold ore scrap without using the proper safety equipment.
It took hours for rescue teams to evacuate the bodies of the victims as they were in a two-meter-deep pit, which was filled with mud.
Mining accidents are more frequent especially during the summer months.
