The head of the World Health Organization for emergency situations, Michael Ryan, stated today that the coronary virus pandemic could end this year if problems in the availability of vaccines and medicines are resolved quickly.
Speaking at a panel discussion hosted by the World Economic Forum, Ryan said “the virus may never go away”, as such pandemic viruses “eventually become part of the ecosystem”, reports the AP. But, as he said, there is a possibility that the state of emergency in public health will end this year if the things that have already been discussed are done.
The WHO assessed that there was an imbalance in vaccination against the coronavirus between rich and poor countries and said it was a “moral failure”. According to the AP, less than 10 percent of people in poorer countries received a single dose of the coronavirus vaccine.
“What we need to do is achieve a low level of disease incidence with maximum vaccination of our population, but so that no one dies,” Ryan said. He stressed that the “accident” was caused by the disruption of the social, economic and political system and not by the corona virus.
Ryan also joined the debate over whether the corona virus should be considered an endemic disease. “Endemic malaria is killing hundreds of thousands of people. Endemic in itself does not mean good. “Endemic only means it is there forever,” he said. Public health officials have warned that the corona virus is unlikely to be eradicated and say it will continue to kill people, albeit at much lower levels, even after it becomes endemic.
