Signaling that they have a lot of work to do with the monkey line, the WHO announced today that it will find a new name for the dangerous disease “to be less discriminatory or stigmatizing” to the African continent, where it was originally spotted.
About 30 researchers have reportedly signed a document stating that there is an “urgent need” to change the name of the disease that has affected gay and bisexual men, writes the British Daily Mail.
They wrote: “Nomenclature references with African references to this virus are inaccurate as well as discriminatory and stigmatizing.”
The head of the WHO, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, confirmed the renaming of the virus.
“We are working with partners to change the name of the monkey pox, the virus and the disease it causes. “The announcement will be made as soon as possible.”
The aphid was first discovered as a variant of the aphid, born in apes in research laboratories in Africa in the early 1960s.
The current naming system divides it into the West African version and the Central African version, or the Congo Basin.
Experts already say that it will soon be replaced by numbers like MPXV1, MPXV2 and so on.
They argue that the virus that has been spotted in humans is of the MPXV type, but can rarely be transmitted between humans.
A new naming system will now be used for the monkey line, similar to that of the Covid variants.
Last month the African branch of the Foreign Press Association urged the Western media not to use only photos of people of color to illustrate monkey pox news in Europe or North America.
