The US says Russia is simply “shifting gears” and the withdrawal from Kiev is not really a withdrawal.
A US official has expressed pessimism over Russia’s decision to withdraw some troops from the Ukrainian capital.
He said any move by Russian forces around Kiev was a “reset, not a retreat” and that Moscow was simply “shifting gears”.
The official warned that the world must remain prepared for the continuation of major offensives in Ukraine.
Russia has previously said it would drastically cut its military activity focused on Kiev and Chernihiv, signaling a breakthrough in peace talks.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken, meanwhile, warned that there were no signs of “real seriousness” on the part of Russia.
Another official told the Financial Times: We have seen Russians starting to leave Kiev. But we have little faith at this stage that this marks a significant change or a meaningful retreat. The Russians are still hitting Kiev with airstrikes. “Time will tell.”
