This year marks the 94th edition of the Oscars. This award is divided into 24 different categories, including a special category for foreign films (not produced in the United States).
The names of the nominated films are expected to be announced on February 8th. The Oscar ceremony will be held on March 27.
Kosovar film waiting for success at the Oscars
“Awake” is shortlisted for 15 international films for the Oscars.
This film directed by Blerta Basholli is inspired by the true story of Fahrije Hoti from Krusha e Madhe, who in search of her husband lost during the war in Kosovo, starts an agricultural business to ensure the survival of the family.
She begins this commitment by facing a traditionally patriarchal environment where ambition to develop is not viewed favorably.
The role of Fahrije is played by the Kosovar actress, Yllka Gashi. This film has been awarded numerous prizes including the top three awards in Sundance Film Festival.
If it wins the Oscar nomination, “Awake” would become the second film from Kosovo that would achieve such a thing, as in 2016, the film “Friend” directed and scripted by British director Jamie Donoughue, played by Kosovo actors , shot in Kosovo, was the first film to represent Kosovo cinematography at the Oscars.
The President of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani, called the inclusion in the shortlist for the nomination of the film “Awake” an extraordinary success.
This film had its premiere in 2021 at the prestigious American festival “Sundance Film Festival”.
According to this festival, the film ‘Awake’ “is a gem which emphasizes the power of its characters, proving that nothing can stop women on a mission”.
The inspirational story of “Awake”
The story of Fahrije Hoti from Krusha e Madhe left an impression on the Kosovar director and screenwriter, Blerta Basholli.
The recent war in Kosovo left Fahrije widowed and homeless. In the midst of pain and challenges she founded the women’s agricultural cooperative ‘Krusha’. Through her business, she also helped other widows from Krusha e Madhe.
Fahrije’s feelings after watching the film were mixed. She relived all those moments, but also felt proud of what she has achieved.
“It has been a comeback once again. There have been very difficult moments that I have presented for five minutes a moment of my own. But in those five minutes, in that role, I felt many other moments. It has been a bit difficult for me, but it is still a pride that I am making a film about my character“, Said Fahrije Hoti.
On the other hand, for the actress Yllka Gashi, “this role has been the best professional experience for her”.
“When you have to play a person who is a real person, who is still alive, who we know, who we have seen in interviews, it is more difficult and more dangerous in the good sense of the word because you can be wrong“, Said Gashi.
According to director Basholli, the history of prejudice and discrimination against women has affected foreign audiences as well.
“I think it is a universal topic, initially women and girls all over the world I think are identified that there is discrimination in different areas, in different cultures, but discrimination is present, stereotyping is present, prejudice is present everywhere in the world“, Said Basholli.
‘Zgjoi’ is a co-production between Kosovo, Switzerland, Albania and Northern Macedonia and is supported by the Kosovo Cinema Center, the Federal Office for Culture FOC and Cineforom, the Film Agency of Northern Macedonia and the National Center for Cinematography in Albania. This film was produced by the Film Industry and Icon Studio in co-production by Alva Film Production, Blac Cat Production, AlbaSky, Swiss National TV./ REL
