Rosemary Penwarden says the vehicle, which is powered by solar panels on the roof, has been running smoothly for three years and thanks the oil companies for the motivation.
The woman from New Zealand has converted a 29-year-old car into an electric handcrafted vehicle, “just to show that it can be done”.
Penwarden drove her converted vehicle to South Island after working with a friend for eight months until the project was completed.
“You must be a little crazy about this, but I thank the oil companies for motivating me.”
Penwarden bought the body of the 1993 car from a parking lot and removed her own combustion engine.
She replaced it with a new gearbox and electric motor and then filled the empty luggage and battery compartments.
Penwarden says the whole project had cost her $ 20,000 and after several years of traveling with her, her invention came to the attention of journalists local.
Refrigeration engineer Hagen Bruggemann, who helped Penward convert the car, has already made eight such conversions. “You can talk as much as you want about these environmental tales but you have to actually make them happen,” he says.
Penwarden is an environmental activist but admits that the time and effort he put into converting the car, can not be found by anyone.
She says the car will reimburse expenses incurred as she once spent $ 100 a week traveling to work.
“Just the fact that I’m showing what man can do is invaluable,” she said.
