The Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Olta Xhaçka, chaired the high-level debate of the Security Council on the agenda “Women, Peace and Security”, which was attended by senior representatives of the UN, UN WOMEN, OSCE, EU, etc.
Xhaçka stressed that recent events around the world have drastically affected the prospects for women’s organizations, leading to the termination of concrete commitments to this agenda.
“We need to strengthen cooperation and coordination with regional organizations, their voice to be heard in the Security Council. It is time to take our cooperation with regional organizations to a new level. Particularly vital is this cooperation in the context of recent military coups and the seizure of power in some countries, where we have witnessed the sudden cessation of national engagements for the ‘Women, Peace and Security’ agenda, said the Albanian chief diplomat.
Present at the debate, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Gutierrez said there was a consensus among member states on the importance of the agenda, but that the situation on the ground was moving in the opposite direction.
“The reason is simple. “Equality of women is a matter of power, today’s political blockades and conflicts are just the latest examples of how strongly they are insisting on making us fail,” he said.
OSCE Secretary General Helga Maria Schmid stated that the role of women in peacebuilding and conflict resolution remains essential in these challenging times.
“The OSCE is playing a vital role in this. Our approach is entirely historical. “We have established women’s leadership in the process of peace, reorganization and post-conflict coordination,” she said.
To the EU Ambassador for Gender and Diversity, Stella Ronner-Grubačić,
more attention is needed to include the views and positions of women in political dialogue.
UN Women Executive Director Sima Sami Bahous said that in countries in conflict
“Women and girls are rising up, risking their lives as leaders in their communities as heads of households, as peacekeepers and mediators.”
The “Women, Peace and Security” Agenda is one of Albania’s top priorities during its work in the Security Council.
