Ukrainian General Oleksii Gromov announced that in Mariupol the situation appears calmer and that work is underway to evacuate soldiers from the Avovstal steel plant.
He said measures to evacuate the Ukrainian army from Mariupol continue, while Russia claims more than 1,700 Ukrainian soldiers have been rescued since Monday.
“In the direction of Mariupol, the intensity of hostilities has decreased. At this time, measures are continuing to evacuate our heroes from the Azovstal plant. “said Gromov.
According to CNN it is thought that hundreds of soldiers are still trapped inside the plant, while not many details have been given by the Ukrainian side.
Gromov also spoke about the lives of soldiers who were evacuated from Russian-controlled territory, saying they were in danger.
“We know that our enemy is insidious, but we believe that the word given by them will be fulfilled.”he said.
Ukraine said earlier this week that the “combat mission” had ended at the steel plant complex, which for weeks was the last refuge in a city occupied by Russian troops.
