On the International Water Day, the Water Supply and Sewerage Company of Tirana organized an open day, full of information and entertainment activities, for children in kindergartens and schools, with the message that water is the source of life and must be preserved.
The Mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj said that children are the reason for the many good works that have been done and continue to be done in the capital.
“We started the car-free days together with the children, 7 years ago. Adults were against. But the children won that battle, reminding parents and decision-makers, both in the municipality and in government, that cities are made for people, not for cars. Children are the ones who immediately embrace the young, in front of us adults. This is how it worked with bicycle lanes, as well as with tree planting campaigns – the children were the first to embrace the idea and then the parents joined. Even in this great challenge we have for Tirana with water 24 hours, where most already have this service, we are working even in those few areas that still need investment, I believe that children will be the first to bring change in the mentality, to save water “, underlined Veliaj.
The Mayor expressed his gratitude to Tirana Water Supply and Sewerage for the work done in infrastructure, while emphasizing that the municipality will keep its promise that by the end of 2023 all of Tirana will be supplied with water 24 hours.
“Tirana has one of the lowest water prices in the country. Therefore, I am enthusiastic that we have started a tradition – I believe it will continue in all schools, kindergartens and nurseries – for children to be the ones who make adults aware of saving water. It’s an ending commodity – it may be really cheap today, but tomorrow, a conflict or an unforeseen climate change could lead to a crisis. As long as we are doing well, to change the mentality and the relationship we have with water, and I believe that by the end of 2023, as was our promise, to make 24 hours of water the last pockets of Tirana, which are still not supplied with 24 hours a day “, explained Veliaj.
