Turkey will no longer hold high-level talks with Greece, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Wednesday amid rising tensions between traditional rivals.
“You show up with your planes from time to time, what are you doing? Have you not learned any lessons from history? Where were you in history, where are you now? Then cry and complain. Do not try to dance in vain with Turkey. You will get tired and you will find yourself trapped. “There are no more bilateral talks with Greece.” said Erdogan.
Referring to Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Erdogan, without mentioning him, said:
“He goes and gives a speech in the US Congress and speaks against us, then he goes to Davos and does the same. Enough, we are fed up with this story. Be honest. “If you are going to be honest, your chair is ready in front of us, but if you are not going to be honest, then I’m sorry.”
Ankara resumed negotiations with Athens last year after a five-year hiatus to address disputes over a range of issues such as mineral exploration in the eastern Mediterranean and claims in the Aegean Sea.
Turkish authorities say recently that the Greeks have deployed troops in the Aegean islands in violation of the peace treaties that followed World War I and World War II.
Athens opposes, saying the troops were deployed in response to the presence of Turkish military units on the opposite shore.
