Montenegrin Prime Minister Dritan Abazovie spoke on June 9 with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who invited him to visit Kiev.
According to Abazovich’s cabinet, the Montenegrin Prime Minister, in a telephone conversation, reminded Zelensky that Montenegro has condemned the Russian Federation’s aggression against Ukraine and that from the beginning it has openly supported Ukraine’s independence, territorial integrity and sovereignty.
He stressed that Montenegro fully supports the European Union’s position on the Russian occupation of Ukraine.
The Montenegrin government announced that Prime Minister Abazovic had received an invitation from the Ukrainian president to visit Kiev.
“During the talks with Zelensky, Prime Minister Abazovi ka expressed his personal readiness to visit Kiev and thus offer support to the Ukrainian people, noting that he would propose to the leaders of the Western Balkans to visit the capital together. “Ukrainians and provide support,” the statement said.
Zelensky, as noted, thanked Abazovic for Montenegro’s support for Ukraine, Podgorica’s principled stance towards the EU, as well as its position at the United Nations.
Abazovic informed Zelensky about the number of Ukrainian refugees that Montenegro has accepted and stated that it is about two percent of the population.
In early June, the Prime Minister of Montenegro sent a letter of support to the people of Ukraine and President Zelensky, stating, among other things, that “Ukraine is defending not only its homeland, but the whole of Europe, as well as democratic values and norms. the civilization on which the modern world is based ”.
On April 8, the Montenegrin government formally approved sanctions against Russia for its aggression against Ukraine. Prior to the decision, Montenegro closed its airspace to Russian aircraft.
