Most of the eastern city of Severodonetsk is now controlled by the Russians, said the head of Luhansk regional military administration, Serhiy Hayday.
Earlier, Ukrainian forces reported that fierce battles were taking place in some areas of the eastern city. “The Russians are destroying everything, they are firing tanks and artillery at residential buildingsSaid Hayday in a televised announcement.
Although, according to him, earlier this week, Ukrainian special forces had managed to take control of almost half of Severodonetsk, when they saw their advance, Russian troops “simply began to flatten everything on the ground with air strikes and artillery.”
President Volodymyr Zelensky affirmed that the city “remains the epicenter of the confrontation in Donbas.”
“This is a very tough battle, very difficult. Probably one of the most difficult of all this war. I am grateful to all those who defend this direction. “In many ways, the fate of our Donbas is being decided in Severodonjeck.” said Zelensky.
Zelensky added: “The invaders announced the absolutely crazy news that they are preparing to merge several football clubs from all the occupied territories into a pseudo-championship, from Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, Melitopol, Crimea, and even part of Georgia.
He called the decision a “mockery” of the Ukrainian people. Only the return of Ukraine, Zelensky stressed, will mean a normal life for these territories, for these cities and of course new matches of world-class teams at the Donbas Arena.
Zelensky also thanked the President of Poland, Andrzej Duda, and the President of Slovakia, Zuzana Čaputová, for their joint initiative to launch “a special trip to European countries with the aim of supporting the European perspective of the country attacked since February. He said that all Ukrainian diplomats are working on this issue with all their might.
