The battle for Donbas will be remembered in history as one of the most violent battles in Europe, said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in his address to the nation late Monday.
“The human cost of this battle is very high for us. It is terrible, We are dealing with absolute evil. “And we have no choice but to move forward and liberate our territory.”
For weeks now, the eastern city of Severodonetsk has been the focus of Russian military bombing of Ukraine. Reports suggest that about 70% of the city is currently under Russian control.
Severodonetsk and its twin city, Lysychansk, form an important regional and industrial hub in the Luhansk region of eastern Ukraine.
The capture of the two cities would give Russia control of the entire Luhansk region, parts of which are already controlled by Russian-backed separatists.
Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov said last week that nearly 100 of his troops were dying every day and 500 were injured in intense fighting against Russian troops.
Even Zelenskiy, on June 1, said his army was losing “between 60 and 100 soldiers” every day, while other estimates are higher, with experts predicting volatile losses could soon bring the conflict to “a turning point ”.
