Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukrainian and Russian forces were fighting for every meter of land in the eastern city of Sievierodonetsk. He called on international partners for help, saying Ukraine “needs modern missile defense systems”.
In his latest video message, President Zelenskyy said Russia’s “main tactical target” had not changed as Russian forces continued to attack Lysychansk, Bakhmut, Slovyansk, west and southwest of the city of Sievierodonetsk.
“The Russian army is trying to deploy reserve forces in the Donbas. But what reservations can they already have? It seems they will throw into battle recruits with poor training and others who have been secretly mobilized. “Russian generals see their people simply as cannon fodder, which they need only to gain an advantage in numbers, in people and in military equipment,” said President Zelenskyy.
While it is difficult to confirm the losses on either side, President Zelenskyy said the death toll in the ranks of the Russians could reach over 40,000 this month.
The British Ministry of Defense said on Monday that in recent days a fierce battle has taken place around Sievierodonetsk.
The ministry said Russia’s capacity to conduct operations along the rivers would probably be the determining factor for the war in the coming months.
Russian forces bombed a chemical plant in Sievierodonetsk on Sunday, housing hundreds of soldiers and civilians. But the governor of the Luhansk region said the plant remains under Ukrainian control.
