Heavy construction equipment has damaged the footprint of a dinosaur believed to be about 112 million years old in the US.
U.S. authorities said equipment that was building a pedestrian crossing at a popular tourist spot in southern Utah has damaged a millions of-year-old dinosaur footprint.
The assessment was made by territory management officials, who said that the damage to the Dinosaur Canyon was small and that it had broken the sides of the trail, the daily writes. NyTimes
They added that new assessments should be made to fully define the area and stop the passage to areas of archaeological interest.
The area has since 2018 vacated the post of local paleontologist although it is considered one of the most important locations of dinosaur crossings in the US, as there have been found traces of at least ten specific species of dinosaurs.
“To ensure that this does not happen again, we will follow the recommendations of the assessments, listen to the opinions of the public and cooperate with the community of paleontologists in our constructions,” the agency said in a statement.
“At least we stopped causing further damage,” he said Jeremy Roberts of the territory agency. “But there will continue to be problems until we have a paleontologist.”
