Greek Navy ships are continuing the rescue operation after a sailing boat in which they were sailing from the Turkish coast to the Greek ones bound for Italy. Dozens of migrants, suffered a mechanical defect and began to enter the water.
The 14-meter-long sailing boat has lost control a few nautical miles away from the tourist island of Mykonos. As of Sunday afternoon, ambulance crews had rescued 108 migrants, including 24 women, 21 children and 63 men. But 8 people are considered missing, including three children, 3,8 and 15 years old.
The rescue operation is carried out in difficult conditions as strong winds continue to blow in the area. Initially, three Coast Guard patrol boats were mobilized, while a tugboat sailed from Mykonos. Navy ships are taking part in the search, and a team of underwater Coast Guard missions is expected to arrive.
Due to strong winds and waves, the sailboat was initially towed to the island of Agios Georgios. According to initial searches she was not equipped with any means of rescue, while none of the survivors were wearing life jackets.
The Minister of Transport and Island Policy, Mr. Giannis Plakiotakis, who gave the order for the immediate mobilization of any means suitable for the rescue of foreigners, stated that: “The Coast Guard has once again saved the lives of migrants, who ruthless traffickers put them in mortal danger, without even taking the basic measures of protection. “Greece is resolutely defending its borders, but its first priority is always the protection of human life.”
