Yugoslavia, a country in Southeast Europe, created in 1918 as the “Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes”, renamed Yugoslavia a decade later, brought together many different cultural territories and ethnicities that were part of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire. The new nation included the current states of Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro, Kosovo and Macedonia. But Yugoslavia faced more strife in the 20th century: it was destroyed and occupied during World War II, reunited under post-war communist leadership, later followed by fighting during the 1990s. Now that the country is no longer officially , most of the region is experiencing greater peace.
