The Mexican National Guard and Army patrolled yesterday a location used for illegal betting where 20 people were killed after a gun battle on Sunday.
The gruesome event took place in the western Mexican city of Michoacan, where violence between rival drug gangs has hit hard in recent years.
The deadly attack took place at the place where betting and illegal turkey fights were organized and was reported to the authorities around 22:30
The prosecution said it had found the dead bodies of 16 men and three women, all with gunshot wounds.
They said another person died on the way to the hospital and five others were being treated for injuries.
Security officials in Michoacann were working to identify those responsible for the bloodshed.
Mexico has remained in a spiral of violence fueled by drug cartels since 2006 when the government launched a contested anti-drug operation with the federal military.
Violence has so far claimed more than 340,000 lives, most of them by members of organized crime.
Michoacan and neighboring Guanajuato Province are two of the most violent territories since the war on rival drug gangs and other activities such as the stolen fuel trade.
Last month a serious attack reportedly left 17 dead at dawn, which authorities believe was a revenge of the Jalisco Nueva Generation cartel against another group.
