Three people have died in the last 24 hours from injuries at bull-running festivals in the Valencia region of Spain.
They had all participated in the traditional festival of bous al carrer (Running of the Bulls) where the animals are released through the narrow streets of the city and thrill-seekers run with them.
In the last eight years, about 20 people have died in the long-awaited and also contested events by animal rights defenders.
Three of the dead had suffered serious injuries in the past two weeks.
In one of the incidents in Picassent, south of Valencia, a 56-year-old man standing behind a road barricade was thrown into the air by the bull and suffered a serious head injury. He died yesterday in hospital, nine days after the incident.
Another 50-year-old man died after being hit by a bull’s horn in Meliana, north of Valencia.
While a 64-year-old visitor from neighboring France died from injuries sustained in Pedreguer’s run.
The mayor of Meliana argued that bulls are animals and that accidents of this type are a risk that people take into account.
The most famous festival of this kind in Spain is that of San Fermin with the running of the bulls in Pamplona, where this year around 30 people have been injured.
Despite the requests to stop the festival, the season of Bous al carrer provides a much needed boost to the regional economy of Valencia.
A study in 2019 revealed that the event created 3,000 jobs and brought in €300 million in revenue from around 10,000 events organized annually.
