Hundreds of people today blocked roads and attacked the headquarters of United Nations peacekeeping troops in Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo.
At least three UN peacekeepers and 12 demonstrators have been killed during violent protests of anger against the UN’s failure to stop the bloodshed in the country, according to media reports.
The UN peacekeeping mission in the DR Congo, MONUSCO, is one of the largest in the world but remains under criticism for inaction against decades of bloodshed in the country.
Large crowds stormed the MONUSCO base in Goma yesterday, while protests also spread to Beni and Butembo.
Butembo police chief Paul Ngoma said the peacekeepers who lost their lives were two Indians and a Moroccan, while at least seven demonstrators were killed and dozens injured.
Earlier, government spokesman Patrick Muyaya said that “at least five people had been killed and about 50 wounded” in Goma.
He added that security forces had fired “warning shots” at protesters to stop attacks on UN staff.
Meanwhile, protesters smashed windows and furniture as helicopters evacuated UN staff and security forces fired tear gas.
The riots in Goma continued today with several shootings and injuries near the supply depots, according to the AFP correspondent.
At the city’s hospital, the head of the administration, Serge Kilumbiro, told AFP that 28 patients were injured by gunshots.
