Jordanian soldiers patrolled the border with Syria after reporting that 30 traffickers had been killed in clashes with the army as they tried to smuggle drugs into the country.
17,348 packages of marijuana and 16 million narcotics tablets were seized as they tried to enter Jordan from Syria, the military announced. “Anyone entering this border area could be targeted by the armed forces,” said Mustafa al-Hiyari, head of the army’s intelligence branch.
“The results were clear as we have shown, and with serious consequences for traffickers, 30 of them were killed trying to traffic drugs,” al-Hiari said. “We have evidence that Syrian checkpoints have helped traffickers by giving them protection, but we are not sure if it was done with the knowledge of the army,” he added.
“There may be cases of corruption at checkpoints, but our message is clear to those who try to traffic drugs in our country,” he added.
