After the death of dictator Enver Hoxha, the communist regime erected the monument to the dictatorship that would soon fall, the statue of the dictator.
On February 20, 1991, a wave of anger that erupted with student protests descended on Skanderbeg Square to tear down the symbol of communism.
This event convinced all Albanians that a regime had come to an end and in fact it did. The collapse of communism happened just as quickly as the monument to the infamous dictator of Albania was destroyed.
After three decades, those who lived close to that day show the emotions they experienced when they saw the unimaginable collapse.
“The boys below the bust were in danger, but they escaped, I even remember when the police came and we escaped, nothing was done.”
“I remember well the day when the bust of some young boys fell and the life was in danger. I have participated in all the demonstrations, but I must say that this is not the Albania I wanted. My body trembles when I say this. ”
“I remember that day was a great joy, my family at that time was fine but I did not like that system and I was in demonstration. ”
Thousands of citizens rose in protest sparked by the student hunger strike and February 20 has been designated as National Remembrance Day for the Martyrs and Victims of the communist regime. It actually marked the end of the dictatorship in Albania. A few weeks later, on March 31, the first pluralist elections took place, but it took another year for the dictatorship party, converted to socialism, to come out in opposition.
