Business is not a flower field for Bulgarian rose oil producers these days.
Made from Damascus roses grown in the Rose Valley, the oil is a vital ingredient in perfumes produced by the world’s best luxury brands.
But a heat wave has cut this year’s harvest, and rising global energy prices have increased costs for a product as precious as oil.
“Rose oil will be significantly more expensive this year. To be doubled this year, fuel costs have increased two or three times “says Plamen Stankovski.
“Our organization has taken several steps in an effort to negotiate compensation for the high prices of fuel used in the production process. At this stage we have not received a response from the ministry whether such funding will be made available.
Production costs per kilogram of rose oil were around 6,000 euros in 2021, but they have risen by up to 40 percent this year. Only the price of petals has doubled since last year, according to manufacturers.
That means a 4.5kg glass jar filled with thick, golden yellow oil could sell for more than 45,000 euros this year.
Bulgaria is the world’s largest producer of rose oil, along with Turkey.
