The battered bodies of seven men were found dumped over the weekend in the Mexican region of Huasteca — a popular tourist destination frequented by tourists.
In one of them was an ominous message from the perpetrators of the massacre.
“This is what happened to me working for the Gulf cartel,” said the warning on the body of the deceased, in a visible reference to the infamous Mexican Gulf cartel, which operates mainly in the northern area along the US border.
The message was signed “Dance Operation OB,” which apparently refers to rival gangs.
The San Luis Potos i state prosecutor said last week that the dead originated from the town of Aquismon, but are believed to have been killed elsewhere and dumped on a rural road.
The photos of the bodies showed visible signs of violence and scratches.
The Huasteca region is quite frequented by Mexican tourists from its waterfalls and crystal clear rivers.
Last month U.S. justice announced the extradition to Texas of a former Gulf cartel leader, with drug trafficking charges dating back to 2012.
“For decades, the Gulf cartel has used extreme intimidation and violence to control its territory in northern Mexico, to smuggle hard drugs into the United States,” said DEA Administrator Anne Milgram.
