Russia seems to be diminishing its ambitions for war, which has already entered its second month.
The Defense Ministry said the first phase of its military operation was “generally” completed, saying it would now focus on “liberating” the eastern Donbas region.
The announcement marks a drop in targets and comes shortly after Russia’s defense ministry acknowledged that 1,351 Russian soldiers have died since the start of the so-called “special military operation” in Ukraine. But U.S. Intelligence estimates the new ale figure is likely to be over 7,000.
On the other hand, the battle on Friday continued outside Kiev, where again the Ukrainian forces maintained the advantage. Reports from UK intelligence said Ukrainian forces had recaptured cities and defensive positions up to 35 km east of Kiev. It is also reported that at least 7 Russian generals have been killed so far.
The situation in Mariupol remains dire. The head of the UN team there said they had information about the mass grave, while local officials said at least 300 people were killed in the March 16 bombing of the Drama Theater.
In Kharkiv, civilians were reportedly attacked while receiving humanitarian aid. On the other hand the UK and other Western countries believe that Russian forces are now suffering from increasingly weak morale as they are suffering heavy losses in combat.
