A 23-year-old and her 88-year-old grandfather beautifully closed 2021 with full success.
Melanie Salazar from San Antonio received her degree in communication arts from the University of Texas on December 11th.
She graduated the same day with her grandfather, Rene Neira, who graduated in economics.
“When we were on stage I felt overwhelmed by emotions, I was silent. “I could not hear the applause, but I was told that the whole stadium exploded.”, said the girl.
Grandfather and granddaughter started their higher education together at Palo Alto College in 2016.
Melanie finished high school while her grandfather, who was 82 at the time, decided to go to college to realize her dream of graduating.
“He has worked for her since the 1950s and getting a degree is one of her life goals and dreams. “But then he fell in love, got married and started a family, so he could not continue his education.”said his granddaughter.
“We had lunch, we were together in the library and we worked quietly next to each other. “I often took him to school,” she said.
Before the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, Neira suffered a minor heart attack and had to miss school. When the lessons resumed online, he was also unable to attend due to health problems.
As graduation day approached, Melanie and her family asked the University to give Neira a degree of recognition, which they did.
“I told him that this was our moment. “I am proud of my grandfather and grateful that I was able to have this moment, this memory with him before he died.”, she said.
