The Premier League is getting ready for the famous North London derby Tottenham Hotspur-Arsenal, the most felt challenge of the English capital, a confrontation perhaps defining for the ambitions of these two clubs for the Champions Zone.
For the sake of truth the hottest and scariest derby not only in the capital but across the island is considered the West Ham-Millwall duel, a fierce challenge that counts only two encounters in total over the last decade, even those in the Championship, however the real London derby in the English football elite is undoubtedly Arsenal-Tottenham. In the first phase at the Emirates Stadium, the “gunners” scored three goals in just over half an hour against spurs, which were then led by Portuguese coach Nuno Espirito Santo, to convincingly win the match with the result 3-1, while this time the teams have changed roles and favorites are definitely “turkeys”. Of course the two teams have changed a lot and no longer have the former brilliance. Other rivals have grown significantly and now these two clubs no longer even have the status of “big six”.
In the last edition, for example, “the gunners” closed the championship in eighth place, with just one point less than Tottenham, finally remaining outside the European Cups, which was not recorded for more than a quarter of a century, more precisely since the distant year 1995, practically before the wheel was entrusted to strategist Arsene Wenger, while spurs years closed the season in seventh position, enjoying for the fifth time in a row the celebration of “St Totteringham’s Day”. A marked day and a very original celebration that has its beginnings in 2002. The idea is clear, celebrate exactly the fans of the team that manages to guarantee the end of the season in the championship above the hated rival rivals. Exactly the day when something like this is finally sealed mathematically is also considered the feast of St Totteringham’s Day.
The year 2016 represents the last time when the “gunners” have enjoyed such a celebration, as the “turkeys” desperate for the loss of the title in the closing week released the second place in the standings. It was the 2015-16 season, an unforgettable season in England due to Leicester City’s unimaginable title, however it was in the last week when Pochettino’s Tottenham’s draw was enough that the turkeys were humiliated 5-1 at St . James’ Park, although the “magpies” were officially knocked down in the Championship, while on the other hand Arsenal Monsieur Wenger destroyed 4-0 Aston Villa inside the Emirates, to close for the 21st time in a row the English Premiership before the “spurs” . Ian Wright, who is rightly considered a legend in the history of the “gunners”, also spoke about the strong emotions experienced in the North London derby or the fiery atmosphere that accompanies the Tottenham-Arsenal duels.
The 58-year-old who was born in Wooleich in south-east London in an interview given recently mentioned the pride and passion of the fans for such a challenge more than a hundred years old. A very special duel that has seen many star protagonists like Henry, Klinsmann, Bergkamp or even Bale. Ian Wright was the best goal scorer in the history of Arsenal, before his record was broken by the Frenchman Thierry Henry and the former famous striker of the “gunners” also talked about the way he scored or celebrated different goals, as well as for the classics with bombastic results between these two teams.
Ian Wright, who with the Arsenal shirt had found the net 113 times in 213 appearances, has now been equated in the overall list of the best Premier League top scorers by the Egyptian Egyptian striker Mohamed Salah, however, although he has currently slipped in the place of 21 in the list of top scorers of the Premier League he is considered the eighth most famous in the history of the well-known London club. Ian Wright who is the adoptive father of two other footballers like Shawn and Bradley Wright Phillips has been working as an analyst on various televisions on the island for years and the 58-year-old added that despite the many disappointing moments of recent years the fans of both teams remain again optimistic about the future.
According to him, thanks to the positive performance in the championship, coach Antonio Conte has changed the expectations of the “turkeys” for this season, while for Mikel Arteta, Wright added that thanks to the space he has given to young players, the Spanish coach is on the right track to turned the “gunners” into the elite of the English championship. The trend has changed and in the field of Tottenham Arsenal has grabbed only one draw in the last five visits to the league, while in the last two decades the Spurs lead 8-3 with victories in the 20 challenges of this century, confirming in a way the progress made under the administration of Daniel Levy. The Tottenham-Arsenal duel is scheduled to be played this Sunday at 17:30, however the risk of postponing this famous derby is really too great, due to the many absences and various problems that the Basque coach has, for him put together 14 footballers./Supersport
