With procedural rhythms unimaginable in other conditions, the European Parliament votes this afternoon to officially grant Ukraine the status of EU candidate country, paving the way for accession to the bloc.
In a speech recorded from the place where he is staying in Kiev, as Russia’s grip on the Ukrainian capital is tightening, President Volodymyr Zelensky called on the EU to prove with concrete actions that it is taking its side in this conflict.
“The European Union with us will be much stronger, there is no doubt about that. While without you, Ukraine will be alone. Tell us you are with us. Tell us that we will not be abandoned in this difficult moment. We showed ourselves, you prove to us that you are truly European and that life will triumph over death, that light will triumph over darkness. Glory to Ukraine“, Said Zelensky.
The Ukrainian head of state signed the application for Ukraine’s EU membership the day before. “Our goal is to be with all Europeans and, most importantly, to be equal. I’m sure it’s right. I’m sure we deserve it“, He said.
Hours later, it was announced that Russian troops had intensified their bombing of Ukraine just as the two sides were sitting at the negotiating table on Monday, a tactic that Moscow said it had used to force the Ukrainian government to make more concessions.
