The Donbas, the region that covers most of eastern Ukraine, has been the first line of Ukraine’s conflict with Russia since 2014.
But now its men, already facing eight years of fighting, are preparing for an even more intense attack.
An imminent battle for control of the territory is expected to determine the occupation of Russian President Vladimir Putin, as his forces suffered heavy defeats in Kiev and throughout central and northern Ukraine.
On Monday, both Ukrainian officials and the Russian Defense Ministry reported extensive military action in eastern Ukraine over the past 24 hours.
Meanwhile, satellite images have shown Russian military convoys and resupplied units moving toward Donbas for a large-scale offensive.
“On the other hand, the Ukrainian foreign minister has warned of an imminent battle, which according to him could resemble World War II.”
A Russian victory in the region would terrify the West, but it could save Putin’s war goals, while a defeat could cement his invasion as a historic failure.
Either way, it is almost certain that there will be even more destruction in the Donbas region, an important historical and cultural site whose proximity to Russia has dictated much of its troubled existence.
Those who have lived in the region describe it as an independent and fierce center of industry that has remained in the spotlight of outside forces for decades.
But waves of conflict there since 2014 have devastated its cities, and along its line of contact the Ukrainian and Russian armies are creating a new and unpredictable phase of the war.
