Mariupol fighters did not obey Russia’s ultimatum to lay down their arms and leave the city, although an agreement on the evacuation of civilians was reached.
Earlier in the day, the Russians repeatedly asked Ukrainian soldiers to lay down their arms and they would spare their lives, but this did not happen.
Mariupol is now one of the hotspots of the war, where the fiercest battle is taking place at the azovstal factory. It is in this factory, in its underground tunnels, that thousands of people are said to have found refuge. A Ukrainian soldier made an urgent plea for help saying these could be their last days or maybe their last hours.
Meanwhile Serhii Haidai, head of the Luhansk region said 80 percent of the country was under Russian control. “If Ukraine does not resist, rest assured that Russia will not stop here,” he said.
The developments came at a time when the Russian defense ministry said it had tested a highly powerful ballistic missile, a new addition to its nuclear arsenal that President Vladimir Putin said would make Moscow’s enemies think twice. Putin appeared on television saying the rocket had been fired from Plesetsk in the northwest of the country hitting targets on the Kamchatka Peninsula in the far east.
Putin said Russia would achieve its goals in the Donbas so that people there he could return to what he called normal life. Russia on Tuesday launched a new offensive to take control of eastern Ukraine through bombings in the Donbas region and took the city of Kremlin, but Ukraine said it was defending the territory and repelling some of the initial attacks.
