Most Russian immigrants are arriving in Serbia, and although they should not be excused for Vladimir Putin’s military aggression in Ukraine, some of them condemn the war.
They are even tortured by a completely different phenomenon – in Belgrade, from the fact that they meet local admirers of the Russian president. There were many Russian immigrants in Belgrade’s recent protest against aggression in Ukraine, says a Frankfurter Rundschau reporter. Among them was a cellist, who after the start of the war lost his job in the St. Petersburg orchestra.
“I was fired because I expressed my opinion about the war to my colleagues. In fact, after the annexation of Crimea we wanted to emigrate from Russia. “The war in Ukraine was an additional reason,” he said. According to the German newspaper, thousands of Russians are migrating to Belgrade. “Russians do not need a visa to enter Serbia.
As a candidate for membership in the European Union, Serbia is maneuvering between East and West and is not participating in EU sanctions against Russia. “That is why Air Serbia is one of the few European companies that still flies to Moscow and St. Petersburg,” writes Frankfurter Rundschau.
Along with Istanbul, Yerevan and Tbilisi, the Serbian capital has become the favorite destination of highly educated Russians. Since the beginning of March, more than 300 companies, mainly in the technology sector, have relocated their headquarters from Russia or Ukraine to Serbia. Belgrade banks say more and more Russians are opening bank accounts, with media reporting 20,000 to 30,000 newcomers.
