Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro said today that the government would hire a company to monitor the October elections, continuing its distrust of the electronic voting system.
According to polls, Bolsonaro is some points behind rival, former president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who was previously jailed for a corruption case.
The United States said yesterday that Brazilians need “confidence” in their democracy as President Bolsonaro casts doubt on the integrity of voting systems.
The right-wing president has been one of the closest friends of former US President Donald Trump and just like him, claims that electronic voting is manipulated.
US spokesman Ned Price said yesterday that the US “has a lot of confidence in Brazil’s institutions, and in their indicators of fair and free elections.”
“It is important that Brazilians go to the polls with confidence in their electoral system to strengthen democracy,” he said.
Bolsonaro also rejected an EU monitoring mission and announced the agreement of a local company to audit the election.
