In an interview with the country’s public television ERT, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis blamed Turkey for escalating tensions between the two countries.
It was Ankara that after the meeting with Mr. Erdogan in Istanbul two months ago, started flights over our territory, said Mitsotakis, while when asked what Greece will do if logic does not prevail in Ankara and there is an even greater escalation of tension , he replied:
“We will do everything we can. And the Greeks need to feel absolutely confident, that the country not only has a strong preventive capability, which I believe we have taken care to strengthen in the next three years, but it also has very strong allies and is part of a framework of countries that perceive that borders cannot be violated by force and that disputes between states must be resolved on the sole basis of international law ”.
In less than a few hours, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in a speech to his parliamentary group, in which he said that Ankara will not change its position on Sweden and Finland, until they take concrete steps to fight terrorism, warned “Greeks spoiled »as he called them, that if they do not change their minds, they will pay as in the past:
“We are aware of the trick that some powers are staging with the provocation of Greece. Greece is a figurative artist in this play and unfortunately we have seen this scenario before in history. At this point the question is whether Greece is playing this role voluntarily or notSaid Erdogan.
What is already noticeable in the two neighbors and NATO allies, who only two years ago almost failed to reach a military clash in the Aegean, is the fact that tensions and rhetoric come almost every hour, not only from the leaders, but also from ministers, MPs and opposition members of the two countries, rhetoric which is constantly broadcast on television channels and newspapers.
This new clash, which is believed to not subside as the two countries prepare for elections, comes at a time when Greece considers that it has done everything to be the most important and closest ally for the US and NATO by giving access to its military bases, but also by buying American liquefied natural gas, while the West also sees Turkey as a very important ally, as a very large market and with an army ready for anything.
That is why statements from Washington and NATO are distant and call for restraint, moreover to avoid a possible incident in the Aegean and instability in the region, at a time when the war in Ukraine is bringing many of the most powerful economies to their knees. of the planet.
