Austria’s last coal-fired power plant was shut down in the spring of 2020, but now the government, worried that Russia could further cut its core gas supplies, has decided to get the country ready again if needed.
“We are preparing for the fact that we will no longer have the same gas flow certainty that we have become accustomed to in recent years and decades. “Coal is a good option and can help reduce gas consumption.” said manager Christof Kurzmann-Friedl.
However, returning the power plant to operation requires a lot of work.
“We see three challenges ahead of us: the first is the creation of technical conditions, we need to repair the plant. The second is fuel supply: we need to bring enough coal here to get the job done. The third is to be trained and to have sufficient staff with the right expertise “, said manager Christof Kurzmann-Friedl.
Christof Kurzman says that if all goes well, within four months the power plant will again be technically ready to start producing coal-fired power.
