From Pristina, the Deputy Secretary General of NATO, Mircea Geoană, guaranteed that the Western Balkans were not threatened. The alliance, the general stressed, has a strategic interest in the region.
He denounced at the same time Russia’s “illogical and brutal war” in Ukraine as well as its “aggressive and malicious influence on the Western Balkans”.
“We have a strategic interest in the Western Balkans. I want to send a message of hope to all the people there that in the end we will all find ourselves in the European and Euro-Atlantic family. I welcome the decisions of NATO member states in the region, which have increased defense spending as a natural reaction to Russian aggressiveness. NATO will defend all allies and every square inch of their territory.”– said Mircea Geoana
Albania, Croatia, Montenegro and North Macedonia are already members of NATO. While Serbia and Bosnia-Herzegovina are partners.
After the beginning of the Russian aggression in Ukraine, the heads of Kosovo’s institutions announced that the country will apply for membership in the Partnership for Peace, which is considered the first step in the process towards NATO membership.
Even before Geoana, they taught the idea that membership is the best guarantee for peace. The German Parliament approved by a large majority the extension of the participation of German soldiers in KFOR by one more year, while many MPs also spoke for the liberalization of the visa regime.
Most of the speakers in the 40-minute debate in the Bundestag emphasized the necessity of the German presence within KFOR, as a stabilizing factor in the region.
