A gunman opened fire on customers in the restaurant area of an Indiana mall. Four people were killed in a shooting in Houston.

A show by comedian Craig Robinson in North Carolina couldn’t even begin after spectators scattered to get away from a gunman.

In Las Vegas, the possibility of a shooting at the MGM Grand casino plunged the crowd into chaos that began due to a broken glass door.

As customers headed for the exits and some hid behind overturned gambling tables, professional poker player Daniel Negreanu was swept up in the painful reflection of an America gripped by gun violence.

“On the surface, others would see it and think it was an overreaction,” Mr. Negreanu said. “But it is justifiable… as we already live in a state of fear.”

It was a false alarm in Las Vegas, but violence over the weekend left more than 12 people dead or injured, including a 12-year-old, two 16-year-olds and an 18-year-old.

The fear of armed assailants has made people more anxious and these gun attacks, or the panic from their fear, were just the latest blows to America in 2022, after a school was turned into a crime scene in recent months, a church, a grocery store and a 4th of July parade in Highland Park, Illinois.

In addition, authorities released a report critical of all law enforcement agencies, including the inaction of hundreds of federal, state and local officers, for a chaotic and lackluster response on May 24 to a gunman who killed 19 students. and two teachers inside an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas.

Let’s take a look at what happened this weekend.

GREENWOOD, INDIANA

Three people died and two were injured after a man opened fire at Greenwood Park Mall on Sunday night. A civilian gunman shot and killed him, police said.

The gunman opened fire after exiting a bathroom at the suburban Indianapolis mall shortly before closing time, Greenwood Police Chief James Ison said Monday.

Witnesses described how mall customers fled in panic.

Among the dead were a married couple – Pedro Pineda, 56, and Rosa Mirian Rivera de Pineda, 37 – and Victor Gomez, 30, according to the coroner.

A 22-year-old man, who was legally carrying a firearm, killed the gunman, stopping the attacker “almost as soon as he started,” Police Chief Ison said.

“A lot of people would have died last night if it hadn’t been for a responsible, armed citizen,” Mr Ison said.

The 20-year-old attacker also lost his life. The police are not yet aware of the motive of the attack.

Mr. Ison said the gunman used an AR-15 rifle during the shooting, and fired 24 rounds in two minutes. Investigators found another rifle and magazines with more than 100 rounds in the bathroom. They also found a pistol in the attacker’s body.

Houston

Four people died after a shooting at a Houston apartment complex late Saturday.

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office said witnesses reported seeing several people, including the victims, shooting at each other after they began arguing.

Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said two 16-year-olds, a 19-year-old and a 25-year-old were among the dead.

The sheriff’s office did not identify the victims, their motive or any suspected perpetrators.

EAST GLACIER PARK, MONTANA

Two men and an 18-month-old baby died after being shot on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation, a community of 17,000 people near Glacier National Park.

Two women were injured; at least one of them was wounded by a gun.

Authorities said there was no other immediate danger to the public and declined to release more information.

CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA

According to police and witnesses, patrons waiting for the show to start at the Comedy Zone ran away Saturday night when a man pulled out a gun, told everyone to leave and then fired into the empty venue.

No one was hurt. The man, identified by police as Omar McCombs, pulled out his gun before actor and comedian Craig Robinson took the stage.

About 50 customers were inside at the time.

McCombs, 36, was taken into custody and faces several charges, including assault. Police have not released a motive.

LAS VEGAS

People ran in panic and overturned poker tables under the mistaken impression that gunfire had broken out at the MGM Grand casino hotel late Saturday night.

Police found no evidence of gunshots; only a broken glass door in the employee area.

Footage posted on social media showed people scrambling, including a video showing officers approaching with guns in hand as some people rushed in the opposite direction.

Mr. Negreanu said his wrist was bloodied and injured in the stampede of fleeing people.

TULSA

An 18-year-old woman was killed after a fight that ended in gunfire early Sunday morning at a downtown meeting point called the Center of the Universe, police said.

Police said she was a passenger in a vehicle when a fight broke out between two groups. According to the police, the shots started that hit the woman and a building, the glass doors of which were broken.

Police received a call about gunshots and children “running all over the place” at the venue, a concrete circle known for its acoustic properties.

UVALDE, TEXAS

A long-awaited report was released Sunday that further highlighted the chaotic response to the May 24 mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde.

A commission of inquiry’s findings criticized both state and federal law enforcement agencies, and not just local authorities, for the shocking inaction of heavily armed officers who stood outside as a gunman fired bullets into nearby fourth-grade classrooms. .

Nearly 400 law enforcement officials rushed to the school, but “extremely poor decision-making” resulted in more than an hour of chaos before the gunman was finally confronted and killed, according to the report written by the commission. Texas House of Representatives investigation./VOA
