The Albanian Red Cross, which marks the 100th anniversary of its founding, was honored with the “Gratitude of the City” medal.
Mayor Erion Veliaj awarded the medal to the humanitarian association and thanked him for his contribution to the difficult period of the Covid 19 earthquake and pandemic.
“I would like this end of the year to be another moment for this kind of reflection, not only how many difficult things we went through, but also how much we know each other and what inner strength we had as Albanians and what were those energies within our species , which made us rebuild beyond disasters. Today I am very happy that the Albanian Red Cross, in the year of the 100th anniversary as a movement, receives the Gratitude of our City“, He said.
Veliaj added that next year will be ideal to increase the ranks of the Red Cross, also as a step towards removing young people from inactivity.
“As Tirana next year will be the European Capital of Youth, we have a fantastic opportunity for recruitment for the Red Cross in every gymnasium and in every faculty. The Red Cross offers an excellent opportunity to be useful, to be part of a network, to feel part of a mission, so I look forward to 2022, the year that Tirana wants new hosts from all of Europe, the Red Cross to be at the forefront. We will have about 1000 events where we will need an energetic, useful, smart, wise, knowledgeable Red Cross volunteer “, declared Veliaj.
100 years ago, at the initiative of prominent intellectuals of the time, such as Ndre Mjeda, Luigj Gurakuqi, Gjergj Fishta, Rauf Fico, Ali Këlcyra, Kristo Dako, etc., the Albanian Red Cross was founded in Tirana and after a century is a member of the largest humanitarian movement in the world, numbering 192 Red Cross and Red Crescent societies, to help people in need and in situations of armed conflict.
