Three months after discharge from hospital, about one-third of patients admitted to the coronavirus continue to suffer from psychopathological disorders such as depression, anxiety, insomnia, and post-traumatic stress syndrome.
These are the results of a study conducted in Italy, by health experts, under the coordination of Francesco Benedetti, a psychiatrist at the San Raffaele Hospital in Milan.
Depression, in particular, is the one that lasts the longest in time and its degree is closely related to the intensity of the inflammatory condition that follows severe forms of coronavirus, even for months after recovery. The good news is patients with these depressive forms respond well to the available psychological and pharmacological therapies.
The study is a follow-up to an earlier published study, which spoke for the first time about the psychiatric consequences of coronavirus, a month after discharge from hospital. Based on clinical interviews and questionnaires, the psychiatric symptoms of 226 patients were examined up to three months from hospital treatment for severe forms of coronavirus. Of these, 36 percent, or one in three patients, have psychological symptoms.
