A group of specialists from the World Health Organization (WHO) has been sent to South Sudan to investigate an as yet unidentified disease thought to have killed 89 people.
The Ministry of Health in the country stated that an unknown disease has killed dozens of people in the northern city of Fangak in Jnglei state.
Local health authorities in Fangak indicated that initial tests performed on some patients turned out to be negative for cholera.
“We decided to send a team to analyze this type of disease and the degree of its risk. They have taken some samples from sick people, but so far the preliminary figure we have received is that 89 victims have been recorded.“, Said Sheila Baya from WHO for the BBC.
She indicated that the team of specialists would go to Fangak by helicopter due to heavy flooding in the area.
Almost a decade after South Sudan gained independence, the country continues to face the threat of war, climate change and Covid-19.
The majority of the population depends on international food aid, while health and education are guaranteed by UN agencies and humanitarian groups.
