An operation is underway to evacuate Holocaust survivors from Ukraine as the war enters its ninth week.
A total of 78 Holocaust survivors are seeking refuge in Germany following a conference where rescue missions were organized for the elderly and the most vulnerable in the war-torn country.
Among those rescued is Galina Ploschenko, 90, who traveled for three days from her Dnipro hometown to a nursing home in Hanover, Germany.
“They told me that Germany was my best alternative and I told them I hope you are right,” she told the New York Times.
Ploschenko told how she was trapped in her bed at a Dnipro rehabilitation center when artillery attacks hit the southeastern city.
