In tents, makeshift shelters or old rolls, activists of Mike Murase’s group are counting the growing homeless population in Los Angeles.
Murase says the number of homeless people in Los Angeles has “increased dramatically” since the pandemic so they have launched a three-day effort to count them in full.
The homeless in the second largest city in the US, gather around small fires to warm themselves on some of the coldest nights of the year.
“The issue of the homeless is ongoing and leaders or politicians do not prefer to resolve it,” the activist told AFP.
2020 figures showed that Los Angeles had 66,000 homeless, 13 percent more than a year earlier, and another increase is expected this year.
“During the pandemic many people lost their jobs, could not pay rent, construction workers, restaurant workers,” says Murase.
“They could not pay the rent for two or three months, they were taken out and when you do not have family or relatives you end up on the street”, adds the activist.
