A Russian airstrike has hit a chemical plant in Sievierodonetsk, the city where the fiercest fighting is taking place in eastern Ukraine, but the governor of the Luhansk region says the Russian target was a reservoir of nitric acid residues inside the plant.
People have been urgently warned not to leave their shelters and prepare masks to protect themselves from toxic fumes.
Serhiy Haidai told the BBC that toxic fumes filled the air immediately after the strike. Based on a previous chemical leak, he predicts there could be a threat to humans within a 400-meter radius of the explosion. Outside that range, people may experience eye irritation, he stated.
According to him at the moment there is no possibility to evacuate any of the 15,000 residents left in Severodonetsk, as it is under constant attack by the Russians.
“The Russians do not offer humanitarian corridors. “Most of Severodonetsk is controlled by the Russians, but the city is not surrounded.” he said.
Donetsk is one of the regions where fighting has intensified over the past week, due to the escalation of Russia’s campaign to take over eastern Ukraine, following the failed attempt to occupy Kiev, the capital.
Shortly afterwards, Donbas became the focal point of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s military ambitions.
