Albania has officially taken over the presidency of the UN Security Council.
On this historic day, our ambassador there, Ferit Hoxha, in a press conference announced that the Albanian presidency will begin work with an open high-level debate to strengthen accountability for serious violations of international law.
Hoxha said that this debate will be led by Prime Minister Edi Rama the next day, a topic which will be important not only for Albania, but also for other members.
Hoxha listed the main priorities during Albania’s one-month mandate in the Security Council.
Excerpts from Ferit Hoxha’s speech at the conference:
– The Albanian Presidency starts with a High Level Open Debate on “Strengthening Accountability and Justice for Serious Violations of International Law” under the agenda item Maintaining Peace and Security. The Open Debate will take place tomorrow, which will be chaired by the Prime Minister of Albania, Edi Rama. Presence at this level shows how important this topic is for Albania and we hope for all other members.
– The preservation of international law and the protection and promotion of human rights are at the core of Albania’s foreign policy as well as the main priorities during our mandate in the Security Council.
– For a long time, we have seen massive human rights abuses and the international community is trying to hold the perpetrators of serious crimes accountable.
– We can not and should not get used to impunity.
– There is an urgency to act, now, on behalf of the countless victims of meaningless conflicts: for the abused women of Kosovo, for the grieving mothers of Bosnia, for the children of Ukraine, for the anonymous victims in Tigray, for Azara in Afghanistan, for the Yazidis in Iraq, for the Rohingya, for the political prisoners in Myanmar and Sudan, for the detainees in Syria, for all the journalists killed in the line of duty; for anyone, everywhere, whose rights have been denied, whose future is buried, whose dreams have been shattered by abuse.
We need to do more, better and faster, for all of us, for what we stand for, for what unites us, to uphold the law, to defend the UN Charter, to preserve multilateralism.
– We must do everything in our power to commit to our core norms and values and redouble our efforts to enforce compliance and stop violations. If not respected and enforced, international law is just the letter on which it is printed.
– All countries, UN member states have a role to play. Albania is doing its part. Our first notable event has to do with just that.
– The summaries for this activity, which as I said will be chaired by Prime Minister Edi Rama, will be the President of the International Court of Justice Mrs. Joan Donoghue, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet and Oxford Professor Dapo Akande, representing Civil Society.
