This is what the President of the European Parliament, David Sassoli, said during a meeting with the Speaker of the Albanian Parliament, in December 2021.
The politician who strongly supported Albania in the process of integration into the European Union passed away today at the age of 65, after a battle with a serious illness.
The politician was seriously ill and had canceled all activities for more than two weeks. Sassoli was hospitalized in Italy last month due to serious complications with his immune system.
““Sassoli passed away in the early hours of Tuesday at a hospital in Aviano.”, wrote on Twitter his spokesman Roberto Cuillo.
In September last year he was hospitalized in Strasbourg where he was treated for pneumonia, while this Tuesday he lost the battle with the disease.
Albanian politicians, with whom Sassoli has held official meetings, have expressed sadness for the premature separation from life of the President of the EP.

Even the Prime Minister Edi Rama, through a post on “Facebook”, has expressed regret for the sudden separation from Sassol’s life:

Our good friend, the President of the European Parliament, David Sassoli, an indomitable European, a proud Italian, an ardent lawyer of Albania, a prominent journalist and then a politician respected by all, passed away suddenly, leaving behind a gap sensitive to anyone had the honor and pleasure to know… ”.
The Speaker of the Assembly, Lindita Nikolla writes that Albania lost a great friend.
“I am deeply saddened by the death of the President of the European Parliament, David Maria Sassoli.
